Quick answer
Start with the purpose of each camera, the scene and lighting, recording retention, network and power, user access and maintenance. Confirm any applicable approval requirements for the site before installation. Test playback and exported footage as well as the live image.
Define the coverage objective
An overview of an area and identification at an entrance are different requirements. Walk the site with the provider and explain where incidents could occur. Consider lighting changes, obstructions and whether doors, shelves or vehicles may block a view.
Plan recording and storage
Retention depends on the camera settings, scene activity, schedule and available storage. Confirm the recording method, failure alerts and storage-health checks. Review time synchronisation so footage from multiple cameras can be compared.
Design the supporting infrastructure
Cable routes, PoE capacity, network separation, cabinets and backup power affect reliability. Existing cabling should be assessed rather than assumed suitable. Agree access arrangements and any building permissions before scheduling work.
Control who can view and export
Use named accounts and appropriate permissions. Document who may view, export or change settings, and how access is removed when responsibilities change. Remote access should be configured deliberately instead of exposing devices unnecessarily.
Test the real use case
Review day and night images where relevant, playback, search, export and recovery from a power interruption. Confirm that the staff responsible can find and save footage. Record camera positions and configuration as part of handover.
Maintain the installed system
Include lens and mounting checks, recording tests, storage review and fault handling in a maintenance plan. A system that worked on installation day can still develop gaps later. Clarify replacement parts, access equipment and response arrangements in any CCTV AMC.
