Zero trust, VPN, ZTNA and SASE: plan access around users and applications

Compare remote-access designs through identity, device requirements, application scope and support ownership.

Compare remote-access designs through identity, device requirements, application scope and support ownership.

Describe who needs access to what

List employees, contractors and suppliers, their devices and the applications they need. Separate ordinary user access from administration. Record whether the application is hosted locally, in a cloud platform or by another supplier. A remote-access design should make these relationships explicit. Giving every remote user the same broad network access makes permissions difficult to review when roles change.

Compare the proposed controls without assuming labels

A VPN can provide a protected connection; ZTNA approaches access through identity and application-level policy; SASE proposals combine networking and security functions in a service architecture. Implementations differ. Ask what the selected product checks, what it cannot reach and how it behaves if the identity service or internet connection is unavailable. Do not assume a product name establishes a complete zero-trust operating model.

Pilot everyday and exception workflows

Test representative users, devices and business applications. Include contractors, remote support and any application that uses unusual network behaviour. Document onboarding and access removal. Agree the procedure when a legitimate user fails a device or identity check. A practical support route matters because staff may otherwise invent workarounds that bypass the intended control.

Keep access under review

Assign an owner to review permissions, device exceptions and administrator access. Record logs needed for investigation and the person who can retrieve them. Check provider account ownership and commercial exit arrangements. Align remote access with endpoint management and incident response. Introduce changes in stages so the business can test the intended improvement before retiring an existing access route.

Cisco: zero trust. Check the current requirements and platform documentation before implementation.

Discuss your business requirements

Techvenation helps businesses across the UAE plan technology around their sites, people and operating needs. Explore Cybersecurity or request a scoped consultation. Share your current systems, priorities and any deadlines so the proposed work has a clear starting point.
