Structured Cabling in Abu Dhabi: Cat6, Fibre and Installation Acceptance Checklist

Structured cabling Abu Dhabi planning guide covering floor plans, Cat6 cabling, fibre, PoE, labelling, testing and handover documents.

Structured cabling is easy to overlook during a fit-out because the finished result is hidden above ceilings and behind cabinets. But a missing outlet can delay a phone, access controller or security camera. Before an Abu Dhabi office or retail fit-out begins, decide how many network points each desk, access point, camera, printer and meeting room needs. Mark spares and future expansion separately.

Confirm the fit-out contractor, the building or landlord requirements, access hours and who signs off routes. Do not assume permission to drill, alter risers or occupy shared containment. Cabling and building approvals should be handled by the responsible authorised parties.

Decide media and capacity from the device plan

Copper cabling categories, fibre type, patch-panel capacity and PoE requirements follow from distance, application and equipment requirements. Cat6 is common in business fit-outs, but it is not automatically the right choice for every link. Check installed length limits and the supported equipment specifications; for building-to-building links or longer distances, ask the designer to justify fibre. Request documented standards or tests relevant to the selected system rather than a generic “high-speed ready” statement.

A handover pack worth requesting

  • As-built drawings showing cabinets, outlets, patch panels, routes and cable IDs.
  • A numbering scheme that matches outlets, patch panels and the test report.
  • Test results for each copper or fibre link under the agreed test method.
  • Cabinet elevations, power and ventilation requirements, and cable-management photos.
  • A list of changes from the signed scope, including excluded items and spare capacity.
  • Warranty information and ownership of drawings and test-result files.

PoE needs an electrical and network plan

Cameras, desk phones and Wi-Fi access points may draw power from Ethernet switches. Add up the actual power required by the selected devices, account for redundancy and check the switch budget; total switch PoE capacity can be a separate limit from the rating of each individual port. Identify which critical devices need UPS power. Do not assume a cable test proves that the entire application works.

Acceptance walk-through before ceiling closure

  • Match installed outlets against the agreed drawing at each room.
  • Review cable support, bends, segregation and cabinet organisation with the qualified installer.
  • Review every test failure, repair and retest record.
  • Run an actual link test with a representative phone, access point or camera.
  • Collect the final electronic documentation before approving the last payment.
