Ransomware on an Office PC or Server in the UAE: What to Do First

UAE incident-response guide: Ransomware response, encrypted office files and server incident triage. First actions, safe containment, practical recovery and when to request urgent technical assistance.

When files suddenly become unreadable or a ransom note appears, the immediate priority is to reduce further damage, preserve evidence and identify essential systems. Ransomware incidents can affect backups, shared drives and cloud-connected accounts as well as the first computer showing symptoms.

What to do in the first 15–60 minutes

  1. Isolate affected devices from Wi-Fi, Ethernet and shared networks where feasible. If the network is affected widely, have an authorised responder coordinate containment centrally.
  2. Keep incident communications on a trusted separate channel in case work email or collaboration accounts are compromised.
  3. Preserve ransom notes, alerts, logs, affected file samples and relevant timelines. Do not wipe all devices or erase evidence as a first step.
  4. Notify internal decision-makers and the backup or disaster-recovery owner. Avoid connecting backup media to systems whose security is uncertain.

How to assess the impact

Identify which workstations, servers, databases, cloud accounts and file shares are actually affected, and which are currently known to be clean. Establish what the business must restore first: point-of-sale, customer contact, finance, email, ERP or operations. Confirm backup age, isolation and test status before promising recovery.

Practical recovery plan

  • Engage an incident-response lead to scope the compromise and determine likely entry points.
  • Contain any still-active malicious access, including compromised remote access and privileged accounts.
  • Recover priority services into a verified clean environment and check that restored data is complete.
  • Rotate relevant credentials and monitor for repeated attempts before connecting restored equipment to production networks.

Considerations for UAE businesses

For a business in Abu Dhabi, Dubai or elsewhere in the UAE, record the affected business services and possible exposure of customer or employee data. Seek guidance on reporting, insurance and regulatory duties specific to your situation. Financial demands should not be handled casually or by unverified intermediaries.

One mistake to avoid

Restoring the newest backup onto the same compromised network can trigger a second outage. Recovery should follow containment and verification, not replace them.

When to bring in emergency support

If the incident is ongoing, involves privileged access, impacts customers, affects several devices, or disrupts business-critical systems, involve an authorised incident-response professional. Specify your location, what is affected, when you noticed it and what safe containment actions have already been taken. Avoid sharing account passwords, recovery codes or confidential customer data in a first contact.
