WordPress, WooCommerce or a hosted store: choosing around operations

Choose a website platform by catalogue, checkout, content management, integrations and ongoing ownership.

Write the operational requirements first

List products, variants, stock locations, delivery rules, returns and customer accounts. For a service business, replace catalogue questions with appointment, quotation or lead-management requirements. Specify languages and internal roles. A platform choice should follow these needs; familiarity with a brand name is not a substitute for testing the workflow.

Compare flexibility with maintenance

A WordPress and WooCommerce setup can offer substantial control over content and extensions, but someone must manage hosting, updates, compatibility and backups. A hosted store changes the responsibility split and may limit certain customisations. The right comparison includes staff time, support access and the consequences of a failed update, not just subscription prices.

Test the integrations that carry money and stock

Ask the proposed provider to demonstrate the intended payment gateway, stock updates and order handoff in a test environment. Include a declined payment, repeated callback, refund and cancelled order. Confirm which system is the source of truth for price and stock. A catalogue can look correct while reconciliation is still wrong behind the checkout.

Check content and migration constraints

Inventory product URLs, category pages, images and existing search traffic. Confirm export formats and map old URLs to their closest replacements. Keep useful descriptions rather than copying generic supplier text across every item. If the site also publishes guides, test how the editorial workflow relates to products and service information.

Price a complete operating year

Include setup, hosting or subscription, extensions, transaction charges, development, support and routine content work. Ask what happens when an integration changes or the catalogue grows. Choose a platform only after the people processing orders and updating content can complete their tasks. Their acceptance is as important as approval of the homepage.
